Biography
Austyn Taylor

b. Rochester, NY, USA

MFA, Alfred University

Taylor originally studied illustration and animation before discovering clay while cleaning out the backrooms of a middle school where she taught art in Denver, Colorado. Thrilled to be free from drawing on flat surfaces, she became absorbed in sculpture and returned to New York to pursue an MFA in Ceramics at Alfred University.

What followed was a ten-year period of residencies across the USA, China, Lebanon, Mexico, and Denmark. Her work has since been exhibited and collected internationally, reaching 25 countries. Taylor now lives and works in Sonoma, California.

Artist Statement

Just as difficult as it is to conceive that one must die, it is almost impossible to accept that we are animals without free will. By nature, we are carried by instinct, as unsettling as that truth may be. Perhaps recognizing our shared condition can move us toward greater compassion and a more thoughtful future.

My work is an act of loyalty and moral obligation to characters I have spent a lifetime developing. My method is to “fall into the work,” allowing instinct to determine what presents itself. I am fortunate that this process has revealed a mission grounded in hope and humor, as well as the absurd truth of our shared animal heritage.
